LeidarRT

Real-time control and analytics for managed pressure drilling.

LeidarRT annular pressure control

Using the latest technology in advanced adaptive control, the Leidar® control system is a robust real-time controller, specialized in automated managed pressure drilling (MPD) operations.

It allows the driller to maintain constant bottom-hole pressure by controlling the equivalent mud weight, adjusting it within seconds instead of hours.

This enhanced drilling control helps eliminate downhole incidents such as kicks and fluid loss, reduces non-productive time by recognizing transient operations and features an intuitive interface to give the driller an instant overview of the operation in real-time.

Advanced annular pressure control

Using models of both the wellbore and the chokes as the primary control method, LeidarRT is capable of hands-free annular pressure control, allowing wellsite personnel to focus on the wellbore and not the equipment.

It is built on the latest technology in advanced adaptive control, typically used in autonomous aircrafts for extreme performance and robustness.

The Leidar Pressure Controller allows the driller to choose one of four control modes:

  • Choke pressure (single/dual)
  • Downhole pressure
  • Standpipe pressure
  • Choke flow

The pressure controller is resilient against any sensor failures and downhole well incidents.

Influx Management Envelope (IME)

Leidar Influx-Loss Detection module is a kick detection algorithm, able to detect symptoms of downhole incidents before they evolve into a well control event.

It has been extensively tested using a dynamic simulator-in-the-loop and accounts for transient drilling operations (connections, pressure set-point changes, surge & swab effects) to avoid false alarms.

The influx detection threshold is set by the user, and can detect influxes as small as 0.5 bbls.

Features:

  • Enable earlier detection of influx/loss
  • Avoid false alarms
  • Single-most cost-effective measure to reduce Non-Productive Time (NPT) caused by kick/loss-incidents

Influx suppression and circulation

Leidar’s influx suppression mode works in tandem with the influx-loss module: Once an influx has been detected, Leidar will automatically suppress the influx by increasing surface back pressure.

Leidar can also circulate out the influx automatically when placed in standpipe pressure mode.

Leidar’s unique adaptation algorithm accounts for changes in annulus characteristics due to the presence of gas, efficiently maintaining SPP constant.

Contingency management

Things don’t always go to plan, so we built Leidar to handle upsets during drilling operations.

Issues such as unresponsive chokes, loss of mud pump suction, and choke plugging are but a few of the contingencies that Leidar automatically account for.
